3rd parties need to find path to presidency
There is no doubt that many decent Americans are fed up with the 2 political parties that dominate American politics. Both Republicans and Democrats have revealed themselves to be more corrupt than anyone truly believed possible. Unfortunately, that has left some good people supporting a half-wit, racist, flip-flopping, war-mongering blowhard whose economic proposals will devastate the very people who was supposed to be protecting and whose health-care replacement plan would have left 24 million Americans without insurance while eliminating the best parts for the Affordable Care Act, because it is hard to admit that you are wrong.
Of course, these supporters will point out that at least he isn’t Clinton, and some might even say at least he isn’t Obama without being able to actually articulate what Obama did that was so bad. While dropping the largest non-nuclear bomb in the U.S. military arsenal should appall even the hardest of civilians as a precursor to the next war that no one wants, it can be fairly pointed out that Obama was also involved in wars that he just kept quieter about.
Either way, whether you wanted to drain the swamp or keep the status quo because Bernie was no longer on a ticket. You’ve been burned by both parties if you aren’t a one-percenter (and if you are reading this, you are NOT a one percenter (unless you are, in which case, take a look at the support button at the foot of the page)). Banks and businesses that are too big to fail got bailed out while the people that those businesses evicted from their homes were left renting or worse, homeless. Even when common sense would have said for the government to pay off the homes as the bailout. (When 8 people have as much wealth as the lower 50% of the people in the world, we can safely say that wealth doesn’t trickle down it accumulates at the top, like cream.)
Still, in spite of all this, people are still rabidly defending the same 2 parties that have structured this mess of an economy, and they are clearly 2 parties that don’t understand the future. The Republicans have gone retro trying to drag America back into the cold war when women were in the kitchen and African-Americans were colored. Sure, they’ll throw Abraham Lincoln and Alabama in your face, but they won’t mention anything about the KKK or their other supporters. History is not the present until they recreate it to be. And God knows what the Democrats are doing because I am decently certain they don’t.
So what does a 3rd party candidate have to do to get into the White House? If most people are choosing the lesser of 2 evils, what do we have to do to be able to help them choose a good person to be POTUS? (Yeah, good luck with that.)
The problem with 3rd parties is that they are irrelevant. What are Jill Stein and Garry Johnson up to now? We have even less idea about their activities than the Democrats have about their own. They pop up for the big race, grab a few headlines, and get blamed for the downfall of the candidate that doesn’t win as the people who went to the polls cast wasted votes for them.
Beyond that, their platforms are typical perceived as 1 issue – the environment, small government and that’s it. What would they do about foreign policy? Can the government be run on 1 issue? (We might find out if that 1 issue happens to be business.)
Third party candidates are unknown. What kind of experience are they bringing to the table? At least Trump could say he ran a multimillion dollar business, even if he never had to prove it. You may say that every voter needs to do their due diligence and vote for the best candidate, but that clearly isn’t happening. The poor and poorly educated usually are too busy trying to feed their families to bother doing research on candidates, so they trust whatever they are spoon fed by their favorite talk show hosts. (O’Reilly, Limbaugh, Hannity are NOT news people. I’d point out the liberal not news people, but I don’t know any of them by name, except Maddow – also NOT news. If you are confused between what news is and what commentary is, ask yourself, does this contain opinion? If yes, it is no longer news, and it is manipulating you to come to the same conclusion as the commentator.)
So in order for a 3rd party candidate to get elected as POTUS, that person would need to gain experience, relevancy, and name recognition. If not the person him or herself, than people from that candidate’s party. Win some state legislature seats, become sheriff, do something that will allow your party to get a foot in the door because right now, you aren’t going anywhere, regardless of your 3rd party affiliation.
