Dirk Benedict talks about the A-Team, Battlestar Galactica and America at Malta Comics Expo 2014
Dirk Benedict took the stage at Malta Comics Expo and talked about his television roles as well as his change in lifestyle to fight cancer and other illnesses.
“The two shows that I am known for are, just through happenstance, iconic,” says Benedict. “Both shows had a spiritual element.” In Battlestar Galactica, family was everything. It was a reflection of what America was. “The A-Team was a morality play,” says Benedict. The good guys stomped out the bad guys. There were no conflict resolution meetings. “It was so American. It’s so American,” says Benedict. “America was the A-Team. We will help when bad people do bad things.” That’s not necessarily the case anymore. Benedict’s characters were of the lovable rogue archetype. A flirt and a lady’s man, that role has disappeared from Hollywood. “In America, I’m the last one,” says Benedict. “I was born too late.” In the Battlestar Galactica reboot, Benedict says that Starbuck was “Lost in Castration,” and that is what happened to his career. “Adversity is always opportunity,” says Benedict, who started doing conventions to hear the fans’ positive feedback. Benedict takes pride in raising his two boys in Montana as a single father. He is also proud of his book Confessions of a Kamikaze Cowboy. “This [acting] was me fighting against the true destiny of my life,” says Benedict. “I should have been a writer, and I am a writer.” Benedict faced some serious health issues including cancer, and he treated it all with a change in diet – no surgery and no chemo. “I was considered crazy,” says Benedict. “I don’t eat animal food.” Other articles about Dirk Benedict: Malta Comics Expo offers unique opportunity for Battlestar Galactica and A-Team fans What makes Dirk Benedict proud?
