Enjoying Life at the Salt Lake City Public LIbrary
Enjoying life is one of five goals the Salt Lake City Public Library has for the community and its interaction with the library. People are invited to the library to experience different events that promote the enjoyment of life.
“People in this country align their perception of a library as a room full of books,” says Julianne Hancock, spokesperson for the library. “All this is is a space, and we fill it with ideas, thoughts, creativity and events. That’s what enjoying life is all about.”
Three hundred people heard Harry and the Potters when they performed during Music at the Main, which happens every Tuesday during the summer in the amphitheater.
“The best part of my job is that I get to connect our staff with community partners who are vibrant,” says Darrah Rogers, program coordinator and outcome lead enjoying life.
The library has partnered with groups like Ballet West, Spy Hop and the Museum of Natural Science. Programs have included author book signings, Senior Movies and baby yoga.
“We have the space and the community partners to do it [provide the programming],” says Hancock.
The library still offers books, and Rogers is responsible for ensuring that the books people want to read are available when they want them.
