Black Suit of Death explores Grim Reaper myth and mental health
When Edd Grimes, a graphic arts student who suffers from depression and social anxiety, decides that it is time to end his life, he fails and instead discovers the Black Suit of Death. The alien, biomechanoid suit of armor was created to reap the souls of those it finds unworthy and use their energy to save a dying planet.
The scientist, who created it to solve the planet’s overpopulation and energy problems, and the suit itself were banished to Earth in its pre-history and has since been responsible for all of the massive human death events. “It is the one truth behind all the myths of death,” says co-creator Benjamin Kreger. “It has a very dubious history.” Black Suit of Death #1 explores the internal conflict that nice guy Grimes faces as the suit turns his violent thoughts into physical incarnations. While Kreger and co-creator E. R. Ellsworth originally meant to write a satire that was good entertainment, they found that the subject turned to an exploration of where depression can take a person and how that person can get out of it. Black Suit of Death #1 follows the Black Suit of Death: Ides of March and is the subject of a Kickstarter project that runs through Sept. 14, 2015. The publishing company, Warrior Innkeeper Creative is located in Independence, OR. |
