Make the season bright not black
While droves of shoppers will be out as early as 9:00 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day to get those Black Friday deals, people do not need to shop to make the season bright.
Those who are just now considering their shopping list and, realizing that their family and friends already have everything they need, shouldn’t kill themselves trying to get a good deal on something that will be obsolete and put in a garage sale a year from now.
A couple of alternatives to Black Friday are Buy Nothing Day and Buy Local First Week.
Rather than going out on Black Friday and facing the hordes, Buy Nothing Day encourages people to become activists by sitting at home and doing nothing. Read with the family, start decorating for Christmas, sleep in and make a great breakfast to eat with family and go for a walk to help counter some of the calories from Thanksgiving.
Local First Utah encourages everyone to shift ten percent of their spending to local stores. By doing so, the local economy gets a boost because about 40 percent of the money spent at a local store remains local compared to about 13 percent for a chain. To further encourage local shopping, Local First Utah is offering a coupon online to use at local stores. Buy Local First Week runs from November 25, 2011 to December 2, 2011.
