Netflix' Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events delights through misery
This was written after watching the first episode: A Bad Beginning pt. 1. Let’s hope the rest of the series is just as good.
Instant Classic. Make no mistake, this series is not for children. It is dark, disturbing and full of adult references, mostly regarding drinking alcohol, which all might also make it perfect for kids. Patrick Warburton is Lemony Snicket, and he does his best Rod Serling impersonation. As narrator for the film, he provides the right amount of stabilizing factor while linking running gags and the story line.
Neil Patrick Harris brings his ‘A’ game from the opening note of the opening song that is a perfect beginning for this series based on the book by the same name. Joan Cusack provides a sweet counterpoint to Harris’ bad guy, and Will Arnett and Cobie Smulders make an appearance. The children all hold their own in this macabre story, where we are assured nothing good is going to happen.
The tone of the story diverts from most of the other offerings in entertainment. The emotions are all played straight up. Everyone is deadpan, and when the shocking event happens, it serves to heighten the idea that these children may be in real danger. For your own sake and the sake of your loved ones, DO NOT WATCH THIS SERIES. You will only be delighted by the unfortunate events as they are portrayed through great writing and very good acting.
