The Dark Tower travels safe route in Cinema
I saw this in Russian; something may have been lost in the translation.
Stephen King’s The Dark Tower has been long hailed as an outstanding piece of fantasy. Fans have waited for the adaptation to film, which most likely doesn’t live up to the expectations generated by the written word and the power of human imagination. Fortunately, I have never read the book and even though I know about it, I have never heard more than what the title and cover picture of the book implied – the version I saw had a tower and a gunslinger.
As a movie, The Dark Tower has top notch special effects and Idris Elba, who is currently the greatest actor in film, or at least in the top 5. Sure, Matthew McConaughey counts against the film, but he actually does alright, alright, alright. The real news here is Tom Taylor who stands up well in scenes with both established stars.
The movie itself is straight forward. There are no twists and no complications. It’s good versus evil, the guy out for revenge needs to be swayed to go along for the ride. The movie won’t break any records; however, the ending does come too quickly. It’s believable in as much it could be done, but there doesn’t seem to be much set up for it to be done. Go, have fun, enjoy Elba on screen; there won’t be any major complications due to the film that will set your life straight or push it into turmoil. It’s just a pleasant get away for 90 minutes.
