Living with the Land looks at food insecurity
Living with the Land at Walt Disney World’s Epcot features experimental ways to grow food in harsh climates. Guests at the park can take a boat ride through the exhibit that shows fruits and vegetables growing in nutrient poor soil.
It also combines the raising of fish with the growing of vegetables. The fish provide nutrients to the plants, and the plants provide oxygen to the fish. This symbiosis creates an environment that increases food yield for people.
Epcot grows the plants for use in their restaurants. Lettuce is grown in troughs, sweet potatoes are grown in hanging gardens, and eggplants are grown on trees. These innovative growing processes increase yield and lifespan for many of the plants in the greenhouses.
For an extra fee, a backstage tour is also available.
The Land Pavilion at Epcot is also home to The Circle of Life, an environmental film featuring the characters from the Lion King as they look at man’s interactions with the land and Soarin’, a hang-gliding theater experience that flies guests over California and includes sights sounds and smells for a complete sensory experience.
Epcot was opened on October 1, 1982.
