the Happiest Creative Place on Earth panel at Salt lake Comic Con
Justin Kunz, Rhiannon Paille, Heather Ostler, Chad Morris, and Lisa Mangum were the panel members.
“I knew I wanted to be an artist, and I just imagined myself working for Disney,” says Kunz. Beauty and the Beast was when Kunz decided that “this is what I want to do when I grow up.” Paille’s parents were realist. She went on a trip to Disneyland at 11 and at some point realized that there was more out there. “I am not dreaming big enough,” says Paille. I need to dream bigger. “Disney inspired me to sell books.” Mangum believes that people should incorporate the blue sky process in making up their dreams. Blue sky is the brainstorming phase of every Disney production. There are no limits on what can be imagined during the process, and that makes every idea valid and interesting. It starts with a blank piece of paper and no wrong answers. At the end, there are a ton of ideas that the company can use. Ostler says that Disney has a connection to her brother. “Disney is great about hitting all five senses,” says Ostler. “They market wonder,” says Morris. “You get sucked in, and it’s awesome.” Disney knows “we got kids’ imaginations on the line,” says Morris. Inspiration: Mangum says that one of her inspirations comes from the Innoventions Pavilion. The one quote written on a second floor wall was “Don’t hurry. Don’t worry. Don’t stop.” She has adopted it as her motto. “Enjoy the journey,” says Mangum. “You can always fix it later.” Like Walt Disney himself, the Disney Company just keeps pushing itself, says Morris. They keep moving forward. “When you’re trying to move forward, you are going to have some flops,” says Morris. “Eventually people want something new,” says Paille. “Usually the hero is the misfit,” says Ostler. The morale is to celebrate what makes you different. “I was always inspired by the artwork,” says Kunz. “Some of the best background art I’ve ever seen was Brother Bear” though the movie itself was a disappointment. Disney Disappointments: Mangum says that when Disney is faced with a challenge, the company comes back stronger. “Superstar Limo was a big disappointment,” says Mangum. Paille thinks that she brought her kids to the park at too young an age. Her daughter was about 18 months old and freaked out at the Enchanted Tiki Room. The Haunted Mansion movie was disappointing for Ostler. Morris remembers hearing three swear words in a Disney cartoon, and he was disappointed by that. Magic: “You have to know who you are, and you have to know what your brand is,” says Mangum. “If you go looking for the magic… then you find the magic there.” “The magic at Disney doesn’t come for free,” says Kunz. “Is there anybody that does theme parks better?” asks Kunz. “Disney does wonder,” says Morris. “They also do heart.” “Whenever you do something awesome, people are going to nitpick you,” says Morris. What sucked them in: Ostler and Paille were sucked in the moment she saw the Little Mermaid. Morris was sucked in by Peter Pan, Dopey and the Genie. Mangum says that the first 15 minutes of Up were what got her. Kunz loved Pete’s Dragon. How to remember the inspiration away from the parks: Mangum has souvenirs, but says that Disney has also taught her how to look at the world with wonder. Morris says that books and movies can have the same effect. People should be making magic every day. “We want this wonder. We want this fun,” says Morris. Kunz believes that “we should sing more in life.” |
