Malta Comics and Pop Culture Expo boosts economy, literacy and battery recycling
Malta Comics and Pop Culture Expo will be in the Mediterranean Conference Center in Valletta from Oct. 31 through Nov. 2, 2014. This year, the expo has chosen to help AGV Non Ferrous Ltd, which already has a car battery recycling program in place, launch its small battery recycling program.
The expo, in cooperation with Diamond Comic Distributors, will also be supporting the fight against illiteracy. Kevin Sciberras, chief organizer for the expo, says that every child who comes to the event will receive a free comic while supplies last.
“Comics inspire people to do things,” says Sciberras. Children, who may not otherwise read, will read a comic book.
Sciberras’ own education was inspired by comics. He got his bachelor’s degree in forensic science because of the Flash, and his master’s in law enforcement and correctional services because of Batman.
“The other nice thing about comics,” says Sciberras, is that it gets people to think outside the box. “Creative thinking is what we need.”
With over 60 guests, including stars like Dirk Benedict, Robert Picardo and Sylvester McCoy, and over 40 tables in Artists’ Alley, the expo is set to cater to over 15,000 attendees, which Sciberras acknowledges is an ambitious goal.
“The more we have of these things the better,” says Sciberras.
By bringing in actors and directors from all over the world, the Malta Comics and Pop Culture Expo is boosting the local economy for longer than just the event. When films, comics and other media have Malta set in the backdrop, it creates international curiousity about the country.
“It helps Malta,” says Sciberras. “You get more tourists coming over.”
Sciberras notes that shows, video games, comics and shows like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Lions of Malta and Game of Thrones have all had scenes set in Malta.
