The Top 5 Disney pirates
They pilfer, plunder, rifle and loot; they kidnap and ravage and don’t give a hoot. They’re rascals, scoundrels, villains and knaves; they’re not even sure if they’re loved by their mommies and dads. But you can be sure that pirates are loved by everyone else – at least, the idealized version of pirates, and no one does idealized better than Disney. Here are the top 5 Disney pirates:
5. Blackbeard – based on a terrifying pirate named “Edward Teach,” Blackbeard has two main appearances in Disney films. The 1968 Blackbeard’s Ghost, wherein he was played by Peter Ustinov, and the 2011 Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides played by Ian McShane. Blackbeard has been mentioned elsewhere in Disney TV and is rumored to have a spot in the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction.
4. Long John Silver – Now that the Muppets are Disney, we could mention the awesome turn of role that Tim Curry did playing in Muppet Treasure Island – “Up stage, lads, this is my only number!” But it is really the 1950 Treasure Island that puts Long John Silver on this page. Disney’s first live action film, it was made with the money that Disney couldn’t bring back to the U.S. from Great Britain because of the war restrictions. (And, yes, he does show up in the animated Treasure Planet.)
3. Captain Jack Sparrow – As much as I am loathe to put Jack Sparrow in the list, there is no denying his influence on the Disney Company. He has been in parades and Disney Park shows, taken over the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction, and the 4 movies to date have made over $3.7 billion worldwide. Who knows what the next film will do? It is clear, however, that the popularity of Jack Sparrow should find him on this list.
2. The Auctioneer – The only pirate on the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction to escape the terrible shift to political correctness in the mid to late 90s. He still auctions wenches as brides and the redhead is still the most popular, bit the Auctioneer keeps pressing for bids on the overweight wench. (These are pirates, after all.)
1. Captain Hook and Smee – the amazingly evil and incredibly foppish Captain Hook goes up against Peter Pan and loses every time. Smee, his inept first mate, is terribly loyal, very comedic and none too bright. The two of them form a great team. Captain Hook is such a great villain that he is in other Pan related animations, like Jake and the Neverland Pirates, and The Pirate Fairy. He is also seen on House of the Mouse, he is one of Disney’s top villains. (Just don’t get him near any tick-tocking crocodiles.)
Honorable Mention: Fortune Red, the fortune telling pirate.
