What’s an aspiring author to do? Salt Lake Comic Con 2013
Panel members include Lisa Mangum, Jenni James, Chad Morris, Adam Sidwell, Aaron Johnston and Brad R. Torgerson.
It is better to have two or three ideas that you are exploring in a story as opposed to one. Torgerson writes short stories by the seat of his pants but outlines novels. Morris says that a story needs to have three things: an awesome world, a great plot and great characters. How do you write stories? Mangum says that “ideas are cheap and plentiful.” She outlines obsessively and does one draft of a story. James writes by the seat of her pants. “The most fun part of writing for me is discovery,” says James. My characters tell a way better story than I ever could. Morris describes himself as an in-betweener, but says that it’s got to be fun. “I don’t start writing until I know what the story is,” says Sidwell. He draws the story before he writes it. When the story is ingrained on his heart, he begins the writing process. “If you adhere yourselves too stringently to the outline, you hinder yourself,” says Johnston. “As a writer, you’re constantly creating.” “You’ve got to figure out what works for you,” says Torgerson. Mangum says that everyone is different and what you think works for book one might not work for book two. Plot vs. Character “The motivation has to be there,” says Sidwell. “The characters drive the plot forward.” Johnston describe four different short story types: milieu, idea, character and event. For a novel, “Your story better be both character and plot driven,” says Johnston. “Character is event – a character is defined by what they do.” He recommends Orson Scott Card’s Character and Viewpoint “You know what causes you to cheer for somebody,” says Morris. That is why there are so many stories about the underdog making good. “Character is defined by relationships,” says Johnston. Good characters should be vulnerable, sympathetic and have seeds of strength according to Mangum. Events: “There needs to be something significant happening,” says Sidwell. “Slow down when it matters,” says James. “Let your characters consider what they are doing,” says Johnston. Other Notes: “’Said’ is invisible,” says Johnston. “Do not be afraid to use ‘said.’” Ask yourself what makes your story unique. “If it’s not unique, you better be one of the best writers in the world,” says Morris. Sidwell recommends that you observe people, catalog them, become that person and figure out what his or her motivation is. |
