Maltese get a bang from their Euro with fireworks
You might read about how much the Maltese love their
fireworks, but reading about it does nothing to bring it to life. (And still I
am going to try to describe it.) Since I have arrived in Malta, there have been
fireworks every evening in different areas of Malta, all of which we can hear,
and sometimes see, from our rooms.
What makes this experience different from every other place that has had fireworks is that the Maltese will shoot them at any time in the day, especially on Sunday. We have had fireworks at 8 a.m., at noon, and at 6:30 p.m. The fireworks aren’t made any brighter, so the sparks are muted by the sun, but the sounds are loud and body vibrating. Apparently, there is an art to appreciating fireworks during the day time, and shooting them off doesn’t wake the neighborhood.
Of course, this does not mean that there are no fireworks at night. In fact, there have been competing fireworks displays, one off firework shots and even a set of fireworks choreographed to Queen’s The Show Must Go On. The latest that I have heard the fireworks is just after midnight. That certainly does not mean that they do not happen later; after all, four days is a small sample size.
