'The Hitman's Bodyguard' is gory, action packed and funny
I saw this in Russian; something may have been lost in the translation.
The Hitman’s Bodyguard is an action filled comedy with plenty of gore and violence and a few belly laughs. Never mind that Ryan Reynolds place the man with the plan while Samuel L. Jackson gets to be his crazy, charismatic self, it is Salma Hayek who steals the movie even with her brief time on camera. Hayek delivers the goods with her extreme violence and foul-mouth that keeps everyone in line. Sure, she’s supposed to be locked up, but it appears her guards and cell mate are the ones held captive.
Reynolds is likeable in the film as a bodyguard who doesn’t kill whose fate is inextricably tied to Jackson’s hitman. Jackson laughs maniacally, sings with nuns and is just plain crazy. Sure, he tries to ditch Reynolds a couple of times, but it never seems to work out. Unfortunately, Gary Oldman’s talents are wasted in this one. He isn’t given much to do in the present, even if he is the ultimate bad guy. His character is one-dimensional as he shows complete disregard for everything.
Yes, this is a buddy cop movie, but it is one that will have you wondering about the characters’ survival in the end. The chase through the canals of Amsterdam is pretty good, but the choreography of the stunts for The Hague is amazing. Jackson drives a minivan, Reynolds runs for his life, and the bad guys keep coming. There won’t be any awards for the Hitman’s Bodyguard, but it does provide a tense, funny diversion for a tough week.
