Top 5 quotes from 'Divergent': quotes 2 to 4
Veronica Roth’s Divergent is a smartly written dystopia story about a society that is divided into five factions and is threatened by the Divergent. (See my review here.) Here are some quotes that are representative of themes in the book.
“All that wealth…doesn’t come from nowhere.” When told about the plans of the Erudite about prosperity, Tris wonders at whose expense the wealth will come from. The answer is the factionless, who are homeless and poor and the selfless people of Abnegation, who are both drains on resources and will be done away with. “Or one of the five predetermined ways.” When it is explained that the Choosing Ceremony was designed to honor the idea of self-determination in the now defunct democracy that once existed, Tris has this thought. Choosing amongst the five ways seems like little choice. (Read more about the idea of choice.) “Human beings as a whole cannot be good for long before the bad creeps back in and poisons us again.” Mob mentality shoes that when groups of people get together, good things rarely happen. Even in those groups that are supposed to be guided by love, people somehow have a way of running afoul of their own stated ideals. Greed for money and power, which is the same thing in many cases, rears its ugly head, and people forget that they are dealing with other people. When love for fellow man is supposed to be the driving force of those who are good, it is hard to continue that drive for longer than a generation. “Humans can’t tolerate emptiness for long.” People must fill their voids with something. Sometimes they fill it with drugs, sometimes they fill it with work, and sometimes they fill it with poor relationship choices. If a person cannot find good to fill the void with, he or she will turn to something that is not the smart choice. See the best quote in Divergent. |
