Like the Tardis, books are bigger on the inside
The Salt Lake City Public Library had a booth at Salt Lake Comic Con. Walking by, visitors were greeted with a back drop of Doctor Who’s Tardis and given a button that says in big print, “Bigger on the Inside.”
While the library was there to raise awareness of its own services, anyone over a certain age could not help but draw the conclusion that books are like the Tardis. They are bigger on the inside, and they can take readers anywhere in time and space. In fact, books can go places that even Doctor Who couldn’t. Not only can books create adventures in this reality, they can evoke other realities as well. Whether you want to visit Wonderland, Middle Earth, or the dark side of the moon, books can take you there. For those who have a limited budget, the library can be a bonanza when it comes to reading material. While libraries are embracing new technologies, they are also the repositories of books, magazines and newspapers. The Salt Lake City Public Library is a great example of a library partnering with community organizations to bring expanded experiences in multimedia formats. Those who live outside of Salt Lake City may want to find out what makes their own library great. Some of the greatest characters in nerdom have found themselves at and made their home in the library. Buffy and the Scooby Gang held court in the school library with a librarian as their guide. Belle was given the gift of a library in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. TNT has an entire series of movies called “The Librarian.” Neil Gaiman’s Sandman has Lucien’s Library. Heck, even the Doctor goes to the library. Maybe it is time that Americans explore their local libraries again.
