An open letter to DC, its fans and whoever is F**king up their movies
We, the general movie going public, the ones who latched on to the first season of ‘Heroes’, the ones who have sat through 2 close to unwatchable and surreally depressing movies in Man of Steel and Batman v Superman, the ones who continue to come back to the theater in spite of those films, want to like your films. Seriously, you gave us Christopher Reeves as Superman, Michael Keaton as Batman, and a slew of TV shows that have been good, from the campy Batman of the Adam West era to Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman, to today’s Arrow, Flash and Supergirl. We don’t just want to like your films; we want to LOVE them.
That is why we are so disappointed in what we have seen on the big screen. “Martha” was the best reason you could get to stop Superman and Batman from fighting? Really? And you have the stars to do it. Affleck is a frickin’ great Batman. Gal Gadot looks awesome as Wonder Woman. Margot Robbie is choice as Harley Quinn. However, when you give these actors crappy scripts with crappy stories, you undermine everything that your company has ever done.
You have great characters. You can tell a good story; otherwise, you would have never survived in business as long as you have. You have great TV shows. Why have the movies been so difficult?
Is it because you are trying to differentiate your shared universe from the Marvelverse? You don’t have to. You don’t have to be dark all the time. You can use more colors than Black and sometimes very, very dark grey. Seriously, take the filter off the camera lens and let your costuming department shine. With all of the bad, terrible things happening in the real world, we don’t need your contribution to make it darker, we want you to help us lighten things up, show us that we can win, and give us a battle that will uplift us while still telling the story that needs to be told. You do not have to brood all of the time; Batman gets made fun of for it, not in a good way.
Look, if you are really having trouble making good films, get Kevin Smith on board. As a fan and a good director, he is the perfect way to get your movies back to a place of glory. We, don’t want to have to choose between Marvel and DC, we want to see them all. However, if Wonder Woman ends up being bad, I will refuse to be conned into any other film that you release that is not directed by Kevin Smith or Ben Affleck, and Ben has 1 shot to convince to stay as a fan.
Do something super with your movies! After all, they are superheroes. (And DC fans, if you want good reviews, convince DC to make good movies.)
