Binge watching in Graphic Novel form:
Ron Randall's TREKKER
Long before binge watching was a thing, comic books produced collections of stories that allowed devotees to read several issues at once. Now Ron Randall’s ground breaking TREKKER comic from the 1980s is available in an omnibus that reads like an evening spent binge watching a favorite series.
TREKKER Omnibus from Dark Horse offers a compelling storyline with interesting characters, including the titular heroine Mercy St. Clair whose character arc is just beginning through the stories in the collection. The overarching story that runs through the individual comic sections is going somewhere, and it is exciting to find out where St. Clair will be at the end of her journey. Other characters offer a contrast to and support of Mercy St. Clair, and they are just as vivid in their portrayal even while getting less time in the story. The color panels are beautifully done and add to the feel of the once black and white drawings. The Omnibus ends with a sketchbook and a promise to continue the development of Mercy’s story. While the Omnibus doesn’t reach the potential that the TREKKER storyline has, Randall has kept his promise and brought his character back to the comics and published new installations. It promises to be an exciting read as Mercy continues to battle with her chosen profession and the coming realization about her place in the scheme of things. |
