Sunday Trips canceled due to weather
5 Oct. 2014
The weekend started off with nature putting on its own fireworks show. By the time Sunday rolled around, thunderstorm after thunderstorm wracked the island of Malta, wreaking havoc and wrecking plans.
The Maltese group that was taking international students to Comino wisely canceled the trip on Saturday in what seemed like far too much caution to students unfamiliar with the possibility of inclement weather. Those from northern climates are used to having to deal with a little rain and a little cold. Other Maltese groups canceled things as seemingly innocent as a picnic in the park and a get together at a bar.
The international students decided not to allow a little rain put them off from a Maltese adventure, and at least one group decided to brave the rain and head to Marsaxlokk (“marsashlock”) for the fish market. The day was gray, and the dark clouds ominous, but they would not deter the intrepid band of explorers.
The rain started just after the group boarded the first bus. When the time came to switch buses, the downpour was on with no sign of stopping. The group huddled under the awning of a closed shop while one member ventured out to some place drier to stand – to no avail.
After taking a poll, the group decided to see what was available in Valletta proper and crossed the city’s ditch in to the main town. A dry shopping complex that featured a Burger King made for a good stopping point to see if the weather would clear up. The group was soaked, but decided not to eat at Burger King. Choosing Rocher Café over the chain, pizzas and hot drinks were ordered all around – except for the Austrian who went with a Pepsi.
There was some discussion about trying to get to Rabat in spite of the weather, but the idea was drowned by the rain as many members of the group were cold and wet. They had also seen the flooded streets firsthand and had accounts of trees blocking travel in the area of the University Residence, Lija.
While the fish market and the Rabat would have to wait, the group relished the adventure of getting out of the University Residence and into the town of Valletta.
