- Get involved at a community level. That can mean a lot of things – go to planning meetings, volunteering for a local non-profit, knowing your neighbors – just get involved.
- “Be the change you want to see in the world.” Michele cited Mahatma Gandhi’s quote and added, “Pick one project that’s important to you, and be a part of that change to make it happen.”
- Don’t take “No” for an answer. “There is always a solution,” said Michele, “Figure out what you need and go get it.” Whether it is money or political power, you can get what you need if you persist.
- Get to know your neighbor. Michele lived in a place where some kids didn’t play with others on the block. She organized a neighborhood picnic to help her neighbors get together.
- Vote. Voting is how we elect officials and how political power is built. If we do not vote in a democracy, we effectively give our voice away. Michele said that “not enough people in this state vote.”
