Malta Comic Con raises artistry and economy in Malta
On Dec. 5 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Dec. 6 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wicked Comics presents Malta Comic Con 2015 at its new venue, the Magazino Hall and Old Powerhouse on Valletta’s Waterfront. In honor of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, this year’s convention will feature an emphasis on the Star Wars universe. Comic artists, writers and creators from all over the world representing independent, comics as well as those of Marvel and DC, will be at the con.
President of Wicked Comics Fabio Agius sees Malta Comic Con as important to artistic development and recognition of the talent in Malta on a global scale. The convention also provides Malta with another form of tourism, which contributes to the country’s economic health.
“We like to use Malta Comic Con as a platform to show Maltese artists abroad,” says Agius. “We have plenty of talent in Malta” even though it is a small island, and some of that talent has made it on the world stage.
The Malta Comic Con has more of a British feel to it than either European or American. The focus is on comics and cosplay, which has grown considerably in the past 7 years. Guests include international artists like Clint Langley and Tim Cook and cosplayers like Flavia Anemone de Benedetta and Marianne Galea.
Malta Comic Con is in its 7th year. According to Agius, this year’s convention will be larger than previous years. Discounted tickets can be purchased on the website before the event. Tickets at the door will be 12 Euros for one day and 20 Euros for both.
