How I learned to stop worrying and love Doctor Who panel at FanX 2014
Bree Despain came to love Doctor Who because of David Tennant.
Kenny D. experienced the Tom Baker Doctor Who. It was either that or Golden Girls. The effects were bad; the costumes were bad. He thought, “I’m 11, and I’m too old for this.” Torchwood brought him back. Someone described it as Doctor Who for adults. “’Blink’ is the right place to start,” says Kenny D. |

Lisa and Tracy Mangum didn’t start watching Doctor Who until after the last Salt Lake Comic Con. Everyone dressed up in Doctor Who costumes convinced them to give the show a shot. They started with ‘The Day of the Doctor.’
“It was still really good,” says Lisa, but it would’ve been better if we had seen everything else.
Tracy was into the show before Lisa.
“It wasn’t until the David Tennant regeneration episodes” that Lisa got into it. It was the iconic scene when the Doctor is fighting the bad guy, gets his hand cut off and still offers the villain a second chance that won her over when he says that is what kind of man he is.
“He always gives every villain a second chance,” says Despain.
Eric James Stone had seen some of the Tom Baker Doctor, but it was “Father’s Day” that sucked him into the show.
There are several reasons why the show remains relevant throughout the years.
“Part of it is the companions. They reflect what is going on in the culture, the everyperson of that time period,” says Despain.
“I would say that it’s the innoncence,” says D.
“It’s just fun to go along with the Doctor on whatever it is he’s going to do this week,” says Stone.
“There is a barrier to get into the show,” says Tracy Mangum. It is campy, there are no lasers and no weapons. “This isn’t for me.”
Lisa Mangum feared that she would turn into someone like the fans in the audience.
“And, yes, I turned into one of those people,” says Lisa Mangum.
