Why do we like to be scared? Panel at Salt Lake Comic COn 2013
On the third day of Salt Lake Comic Con 2013, a panel of Guy Anthony de Marco, Michaelbrent Collings, Nathan Shumate, Kenny D., Andrea Ciliberti, and Carter Reid discussed the horror genre and why we like to be scared.
Some of the reasons that people go to see horror movies are because they are awesome, and there are topless women in them. People like to see others killed in inventive ways. “I think it’s comfort food,” says Kenny D. We are like the facilitators in Cabin in the Woods; we get to watch the horror and see how it turns out. “It’s a lot about emotions,” says Ciliberti. “We like to stay in control of our feelings.” Watching a horror film provides a safe fear. “You know you are going to walk out of the theater,” says de Marco. De Marco says that one of his favorite writers is Algernon Blackwood. “You don’t know why you are so creeped out (after reading one of his stories),” says de Marco. The horror section is made of many different genres. How else could Edgar Allan Poe and Jason be in the same category? “Once you know something, it’s no longer scary,” says Reid. “We’re afraid of the unknown.” The scariest thing is an ajar door because anything can be behind that door. Jaws was scary because the movie didn’t show the shark until the end. Shumate found the genre bending episode of the Waltons that included a poltergeist to be especially terrifying because it wasn’t what he expected from the Waltons. He also remembers his school renting Children of the Corn when he was in the 7th grade. “It scared the crap out of me,” says Shumate. See Shumate talk about why people like horror movies See Andrea Ciliberti talk about the last movie that scared her Other Notes: “The very best horror is not about kills,” says one panelist. “It’s about thriving.” “It’s all about the chemistry.” “I find the adrenaline fun.” “The corporeal dead are not scary, I can fight them,” says Reid. With ghosts, “there’s nothing you can do.” “It takes more skill to be subtly horrifying,” says Shumate. Collings says that his father was the first champion for people to see Stephen King as literature. “Horror is not about pain, it’s about people,” says Collings. Horror writers have an inner drive that requires them to write in the genre. “You’re trying to get an audience to experience stuff,” says Shumate. “Bore me and die” or “confuse me and lose me.” Chiller Theater at midnight was one inspiration for de Marco. “I can’t stand that (torture porn),” says Reid. “I like the tension.” He also says that “I am afraid of my neighbors.” “Torture porn bears the same relationship to real horror” that porn bears to romance, says Shumate. Blood, boobies and poop inspire visceral feelings because we are hardwired to react to them. “Hollywood is afraid to try new properties,” says Reid. Favorite Horror Films: John Carpenter’s The Thing Inisdious Frailty The Conjuring Victorville The Changeling IT – at least the first part of the miniseries. Dead Alive – “You have to watch it with friends,” says Kenny D. House of the Devil – “It gives you room to think,” says Ciliberti. “It messes with your mond and your feelings at the same time. I saw the Devil The Haunting of Hill House – the original Audition The Lovely Kill Favorite Horror Authors: Algernon Blackwood H.P. Lovecraft Edgar Allan Poe Darkbound
