Music mystery: I’m an Albatraoz
This essay is for mature audiences only
Aronchupa and his group Albatraoz have created a catchy tune called “I’m an Albatraoz” with the guest vocals of Nora Eckberg. The word is pronounced like “albatross,” but in a way that it can rhyme with “mouse.” Eckberg raises her arms when she sings “albatraoz” so that it looks like she is flying.
The story is about a mouse named Laurie that lives in brown house that is vocally accented in a strange way. Laurie is all about the money, but Eckberg doesn’t care because Eckberg is an Albatraoz. I don’t exactly know what one has to do with the other. Maybe Eckberg is jealous of the mouse and wants to fly above the jealousy. Maybe Eckberg is referring to the fact that Albatraoz can become a huge musical sensation, and so Eckberg will have money at some time in the future.
The mice, Bianca and Bernard of The Rescuers and The Rescuers Down Under did use Albatross Airlines to get to where they were needed, but that doesn’t seem to have anything to do with this video or song.
Who are the two guys with horns, and what is their role in this song? It is cool to have them; I like horns in my music, but these grizzled jazz musicians are left with nothing to do but rock to the music. At least the piano player gets to play the cool riff at the beginning and an interlude in the middle, and the drum player sets up the beat.
The DJ, Aron Chupa, is playing to an empty auditorium and is so into the electro-pop beat that he exhorts the imagined members of the audience to do whatever those hand gestures are suggesting that people do – get down, rock, mosh, I don’t really know – but at least he is pumping the music up with his energy.
Eckberg’s dance moves consist of what appears to be some sort of simplified belly dancing and synchronized arm movements, but it is quite a bit of alright, captivating really. However, it is her final phrase that creates the question, “I’m an Albatroaz, so…” SO WHAT? The music stops, and we may never know the answer.
