Women as represented in the media creates Miss Representation
On March 19, 2012, the National Association of Women Business Owners Salt Lake Chapter hosted a screening of “Miss Representation” at Salt Lake Community College’s Grand Theatre. The screening was followed by a question and answer session with Executive Director Geralyn Dreyfous and an after party at Piper Down.
The film attempts to deconstruct the influence of the media on how women in the United States see themselves. “I couldn’t have anticipated that the film would have hit the cultural nerve that it has,” says Dreyfous. The film doesn’t look strictly at body perception, but also addresses depictions of women in power, issues of role models and how the media portrayals affect men. The next two film projects that Dreyfous is working on are a “Miss Representation” type of film for men and a look at how other countries deal with women in the media.
