Malta Archery hits target at Malta Comics Expo 2014
Malta Comics Expo 2014 started its last day with an archery demonstration from Malta Archery. Armin Himer and Francesco explored different ways of shooting and rated Hollywood’s archers based on their styles.
Brave got everything right about shooting a bow. Even the Archer’s Paradox, which describes the way that an arrow flies through the air while its shaft, also called a spine, contorts due to the forces applied to the arrow, is well animated.
Arrow uses his chin as an anchor point, and while there is nothing particularly wrong with that, it would lead to less power for the use of his bow. The typical anchor point for an instinctive archer is the middle finger to the corner of the mouth.
Arrow also tends to have his elbow out of alignment with his arrow, which means that he is using arm strength rather than his back muscles. That would make it harder to pull his bow, especially considering what kind of bow he would need to embed arrows into concrete. It could also cause serious joint problems later in life. Arrow’s parkour is better than his archery.
Legolas could shoot three arrows at once, but they would lose power. It would be better to shoot three arrows quickly.
Himer was reluctant to address Hawkeye’s archery skills saying that Hawkeye is “a bit far from reality, but I suppose everything is a bit far from reality in this film.”
The Game of Thrones’ archers shoot properly.
CGI makes archery in the movies easy. However, it can result in a lot of ruined bows because actors and stuntmen will fire the bows without an arrow. This places a great amount of stress on limbs of the bow causing them to break.
Howard Hill taught Errol Flynn to shoot a bow and arrow.
“Archery is a martial art,” says Himer.
The Romans and the Templars were the only cultures not to use a bow and arrow because they thought it was a sign of weakness.
“The draw weight [of a bow] must match the spine of the arrow,” says Himer. Arrows that do not match their bow can break or have other consequences.
When shooting a bow, the archer should move his or her body when shooting up or down – not the bow.
Archers on horseback would never use a back quiver in battle. They would lose arrows, and the arrows are hard to grab. Instead, they use a side quiver that includes a way to lodge the arrows in the quiver.
The record for flight shooting is about 800 meters.
