Foods in Malta: The Search for Kannoli
21 Oct. 2014 – After eating at iPlace in Marsaxlokk, Bernhard said that he saw a place that sold kannoli, and I had been going on about kannoli for so long that he thought it was time to try some. I was full from a glut of calamari and a few salmon ravioli, so I wasn’t sure that I could eat an entire kannoli.
We got to the dessert truck, and fortunately for me, it had some small kannoli. Bernhard got a large version, probably with chocolate (which I secretly wrinkled my nose at). I got the smaller version with vanilla. The crust was less than crunchy, and the filling was a mass of congealed sugary sweetness with no texture. This was not kannoli, and I told Bernhard so.
He was glad to hear that. He thought maybe it was like Kinnie – something I like that most other foreigners do not. I made a mental note to go to the bakery near the University Residence to show him what real Kannoli was.
Today we got our chance. The bakery was open, but they didn’t have any kannoli. Foiled again.
Bernhard was happy with his cone of cream, chocolate and strawberry jam. I settled for a November Bones, which is a type of cookie, shaped like a bone. The marrow inside is made from marzipan, at least as far as I could tell.
The search for kannoli will continue…
