The gift that sings!
If you are an American Idol fan or are into your local music scene, you have the opportunity to do something great for your sanity and for the music that you like. Rather than spend your money at a crowded store where people are fighting over the last half priced Disney Infinity starter set, you can spend your money on something that will really make a difference to a person and to your taste in music.
In capitalism, we all vote with our dollars. Those with more dollars get more votes, but even those at the bottom can help influence the decision makers at the top of the capitalist food chain. If you choose to support singers like Casey Abrams, Haley Reinhart and Rachel Zevita by buying their tunes through Bandcamp, Amazon, iTunes or their websites, you are putting money directly into their pockets, so that they can continue to bring you the music that you like.
Groups that haven’t broken into the American consciousness like the Good Lovelies, Sybarite5 and Joe Reilly can make for a great gift, especially for someone who is into music and may not have heard about them.
You are also telling the music industry that you want more music from the genre that they sing and from people like them. The only reason why Miley Cyrus gets to stick out her tongue and twerk at the AMAs is because people have bought so much of her music. The industry believes that is what people want to see and hear.
When you connect your dollars to what it is that you are buying, you might be surprised at the actual results. Purchase items from a retailer that is open on Thanksgiving, and you will get more stores that open on Thanksgiving. Purchase music from more wholesome entertainers, and you will get great music without all of the theatricality.
For this holiday season, avoid the crowds and the stores, give the gift of music and let others know what singers you enjoy
